The End of the line for traditional photography?

The End of the line for traditional photography?

Could this be the end of photography or perhaps the beginning of a new photographic age? This is  what I pondered when  somebody told me how the shoot was set up for the most recent front page of Esquire. The author of this unique graphic document, Greg Williams, used a Red One 4K for the shoot, something usual in his work but unusual in the industry. With the Red One camera, Greg recorded a video of  Megan Fox and after that he chose some shots that he liked.

Red Ones popularity doesn’t come from a duality between video and photo but from its reasonable price. There are 4520 x 2540 definition pixels  and they capture around 60 images per second. Another important feature is that this camera is completely modular, that is to say you can replace all its elements, although the sum may be greater than the whole in this case.

As you can see at Esquire.com, each shot from the video produced the same results as  a reflex camara shot.

With this new kind of camera, you can fuse two media outlets in one and see the birth of  a new media agent, the photographer- camera operator.

Although, there won’t be many photographers willing to pay the 18.000 € that it costs just for shooting pictures some may turn it into a new art form. If you think about it, a 10 minute video would mean the extra work of checking 36.000 photos. But if you look at it from a positive point standpoint, we would have greatly detailed video with an uncountable (unless you are good at maths) number of pictures.

On the other hand, Red One is enjoying great success in the film industry; directors such as Peter Jackson, have already used it but it’s going to be dificult to translate this success to the photographic industry, but at least there will be some profesionals such as Greg William who would use it for their more creative works.
